How do I design a training program for a half marathon? Just ask my coworker Dr. Kristen Lattimore! As the resident running/endurance athlete specialist here at SPARK, Kristen asked me to design a training program in preparation for the Norfolk Half Marathon we will be running on November 20th. There are many components I take into consideration when designing a program for runners. The main elements include:

  1. Goals
  2. The runner’s medical and training background
  3. Time frame for training
  4. Types of workouts within a training program

In my following blogs, I will go into detail on each of these elements so you can see exactly how I put the numbers together. You will also be able to see what is specific to Kristen that I needed to keep in mind when designing her program in order to set her up for success and decrease the risk of injury. Stay tuned over the next few weeks so you don’t miss out on the details!

Follow Kristen and me during our build up to the Norfolk Half! We’ll be incorporating our progress into our blogs and social media updates so tune in and reach out with questions, comments or let us know if you’ll be there running too!
